OK, I'm freaking out over here.
Remember Job A and that glowing rejection letter? Well, I had lunch with that woman today (who I absolutely adore), and discovered that the chick who got the job quit this morning! Now she's offering me the job with a promise of a big promotion in 7 months, and an even bigger one down the line (as in managing my own library). But she knows that I've lined up this other great gig. So she suggested that I try the other job on for a week, and then let her know if I want to abandon ship and come work for her.
I don't know what to do!
Each situation has certain things going for it. Job A feels more like me (i.e. it's not corporate), there is a clear path for advancement, and I think my boss would be a true mentor. Job B is more financially lucrative (but only a bit more once the Job A promotion went into effect), great benefits immediately, and it will stretch me in a new direction professionally. Job A is working with the public which is rewarding, but can also be exhausting. Job B is working in a private company, shielded from the world to a large degree, but also less chance of frontline burnout (although maybe I'd burn out on the corporate lifestyle...).
Considering the state of the economy and the difficulty of getting a job these days, I know that I am very, very lucky. I'm so grateful for this "problem" but I'll be tossing and turning tonight.

Yikes!!! I have no advice, but that is exciting and scary.
ReplyDeleteThat is really cool that the woman said to try Job B for a week and see how it goes. Ugh, though...don't you wish sometimes that someone would just tell you what to do?!
ReplyDeleteGood luck, Haley!!!!!!
WOW!
ReplyDeleteHmmm. That's an interesting dilemma! It would still be kind of awful to have to resign from Job B, but at the same time, you should take Job A up on it!
Everyone is different. Some times non corporate / non profit jobs are more energy (Job A) but it sounds like it might keep you more engaged.
Don't worry about money, the important thing it to do what calls to you.
Okay I can't say anything on my blog... but... something similar (ish) might be going on over here. There is the potential (not at all finalized... still might fall through) that we might be able to go back to Ann Arbor.
ReplyDeleteSo no advice. I know well how confusing it is.
But I will say be sure those promotions are set in stone. As you know the promises that came with Mr F's current job did not pan out.
Ooooo. Love it. I mean, I'm happy for you and glad I don't have to make the decision. But I agree with Sherri, don't worry about the money, do what you really want to do.

ReplyDeleteExciting aand scary indeed!
Julie--
I know, I just want someone to swoop in and be like "This is the right decision." :)
Sherri--
Thanks for commenting -- welcome! I really do not like the idea of pulling out of a job under these kind of circumstances -- I would feel so awful. That kind of scares me more than anything. You're totally right, too, about going for what will make me happiest...now if only I knew what that was... ;)
Mrs. F --
Oh man, I will keep my fingers crossed for you (and my mouth closed about this on your blog)! I know how happy moving back would make you -- good luck!
And adam said the same thing about the promotions, which I really needed to be reminded of -- I'm too quick to just take people at their word sometimes...
Katieo--
Aw come on, can't I just get you to choose for me? ;)
How great to be in such high demand!
ReplyDeleteNow, do you have any idea why the other gal quit after a week? That might be interesting to know.
Scrumpy --
ReplyDeleteApparently she exaggerated her experience and had trouble learning the techinical aspects of the job. I'm not too worried about that because they know I'm a total beginner and would expect a steep learning curve. But who knows, maybe it was more than that -- she might just not have vibed on the atmosphere, one never knows...
Man, that adds to the difficulty. Read your horoscope and see if that brings out your real thoughts through the interpretation. :)
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome that she is letting you check out job B (or was it A) for a week, and giving you the chance to see what it's like. I bet you'll know by then if it's for you. Job A sounds more up your alley. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteAny hints on how to interview because obviously I suck serious balls at it!
